Tires
Benefits of having new tires.
-Increased safety
-Better gas mileage
-Better handling and performance
-Improved traction
There are as many replacement tires as there are cars, and they vary in terms of tread design, performance, and price. Fast Tire can help you select the right ones for your vehicle and make sure they’re installed properly.
How often do I need new tires?…
Fast Tire recommends getting new tires every 30,000 or 40,000 miles. If your tread is at 4/32 of an inch, it is a good time to consider getting new. Anything less and the tire is considered “bald,” and legally worn out in most states.
- The Quarter Test
- Place a quarter upside down in the tread grooves. If part of Washington’s head is covered, then your tires are okay. When the tread just touches the top of his head, it’s time for new.
- The Penny Test
- To be legal in most states, tires must pass the penny test–a minimum tread depth of 2/32 inch. If the tread covers part of Abe’s head, your tires are okay. If not, it’s time to replace your them.
- Wear Bar Test
- Manufacturers also place wear bars in the grooves between treads. Replace your tires when the treads are flush with the wear bars.
Selecting the right tires…
In an effort to help consumers compare tires, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) established the Uniform Tire Quality Grading Standards (UTQGS).
They require tires to be graded in three categories:
- Treadwear Rate
- Traction Performance
- Temperature Resistance
A couple of tips…
Choose a tire rated 300 or better.
If your daily commute racks up big mileage, pay special attention to the UTQG treadwear rating printed on the side of your tires.
Select an A-rated tire.
If you often drive at highway speeds or tow a boat or trailer, the UTQG temperature rating is important. Overheated tires can cause blowouts.
